Zomi Community Research

About

The people behind the research

Lives in Limbo is community-led research designed, carried out, and published by Zomi people to create a careful and lasting record of Zomi lives in Malaysia.

Research by the community, for the community

Lives in Limbo was designed and led by Dr. Suan Lian Tuang and carried out by a Zomi research team of fourteen, working with Zomi organizations across Malaysia. It was published by Zomi Community USA (Zomi Innkuan USA) as a careful and lasting record of the experiences of Zomi people in Malaysia.

The Zomi are an ethnic group whose communities span an upland region now divided among Myanmar, India, and neighboring areas. For more than two decades, conflict, persecution, and political instability have driven Zomi people from Myanmar to countries including Malaysia, where many must build lives without legal status.
